L’effet de la vallée dérangeante est une réaction psychologique devant certains robots humanoïdes. Son existence a été suggérée par le roboticien japonais Masahiro Mori en 1970. Il décrit le fait que plus un robot humanoïde est similaire à un être humain, plus ses imperfections nous paraissent monstrueuses. Ainsi, certains observateurs seront plus à l’aise en face d’un robot clairement artificiel que devant un robot doté d’une peau, de vêtements et d’un visage pouvant passer pour humain. La théorie prévoit cependant qu’au delà d’un certain niveau de perfection dans l’imitation, les robots humanoïdes sont beaucoup mieux acceptés. C’est pour cela qu’est utilisé le terme de vallée : il s’agit d’une zone à franchir dans laquelle chaque progrès fait vers l’imitation humaine amènera plus de rejet avant de finalement amener une acceptation plus grande.

In the second edition of the book (which sports not only Larry Wall as author, but also Tom Christiansen and Randal Schwartz as co-authors), there is a glossary which has pithy definitions for each of these terms:

Laziness

The quality that makes you go to great effort to reduce overall energy expenditure. It makes you write labor-saving programs that other people will find useful, and document what you wrote so you don’t have to answer so many questions about it. Hence, the first great virtue of a programmer. Also hence, this book. See also impatience and hubris. (p.609)

Impatience

The anger you feel when the computer is being lazy. This makes you write programs that don’t just react to your needs, but actually anticipate them. Or at least pretend to. Hence, the second great virtue of a programmer. See also laziness and hubris. (p.608)

Hubris

Excessive pride, the sort of thing Zeus zaps you for. Also the quality that makes you write (and maintain) programs that other people won’t want to say bad things about. Hence, the third great virtue of a programmer. See also laziness and impatience. (p.607)

Il s’agit d’une campagne de sensibilisation pour inciter la population à se faire vacciner contre la grippe. Diffusée en Australie.
L’effet de dramatisation obtenu grâce à l’ultra-ralenti sur la morve expulsée lors de l’éternuement est très efficace.

J’ai trouvé cette image il y a quelques mois dans mon courrier indésirable. Elle m’annonce sûrement une bonne affaire en bourse ou une amélioration de mes performances sexuelles mais elle est illisible. L’algorithme qui permet de générer une image toujours unique à partir d’un même texte – afin de contourner les filtres anti-spam – a buggé, victime de sa propre complexité. C’est une création accidentelle, le cadeau fortuit d’un expéditeur mal-intentionné. Je l’ai imprimée et accrochée au mur de mon bureau.
